Research areasFields of researchFIRE (Finnish Information Retrieval Expert Group) FIREFIRE is the Finnish Information Retrieval Group consisting of Finnish researchers and postgraduate students in information retrieval. The participants in FIRE do basic and applied research on various aspects of information storage and retrieval, including bibliographic, textual and multimedia databases, database design, reorganization, and documents management. The major part of the empirical research in FIRE is based on the Information Retrieval Laboratory text and image document test collections. FIRE organizes seminars and unofficial meetings for researchers. FIRE is open to researchers and students interested in information retrieval (IR). REGIMThe participants in REGIM do mostly applied research on information and documents management and also on archival theory in the public and private sectors. REGIM organizes unofficial research seminars and discussion forums in collaboration with the REGIS group. REGIM also invites students interested in these fields of research to participate in the activities of the group. More information is available on the homepage of the REGIM group. REGISResearch on information needs and information seeking contribute to the main fields of research in the Department of Information Studies at the University of Tampere. The Research Group in Information Seeking (REGIS) was founded in 1994. REGIS is administered by Professors Pertti Vakkari and Reijo Savolainen. The major topics of research are infomation needs in work tasks and processes of information seeking. The research focuses on people's ways and means of seeking and using the information outside, work as in hobbies. The group also does research focusing on the use of information networks and digital libraries. One topic of particular interest is social informatics. Other special fields of research within Information StudiesIn addition to the research groups working within the main foci of the Department of Information Studies there is more research ongoing in both the teachers' and researchers' own special areas of interest and in the form of doctoral dissertations.
